The Back-UPS series is the economy line of uninterruptible power supplies from APC. These are basic standby power backup units that will switch over to battery power in the event of a power outage.

A UPS is also a surge protector. All UPS's have some type of surge protection capability. If you are looking for a surge protector to protect valuable home electronics or other equipment, a UPS backup from this category may be an ideal solution. Not only will it protect your equipment but in the event of a power outage, it will continue to provide power for a few minutes as well. A great win-win solution. Typically a decent surge protector from a retail store will cost you more than one of these UPS units. Just make sure that the wattage load of the equipment that you plan on protecting does not exceed the capacity of the UPS otherwise you will end up with the UPS in an overload condition. A simple rule of thumb is to multiply the VA rating of a UPS by 0.66 and the answer is roughly the maximum number of watts that the UPS will support e.g. a 1000VA UPS is roughly 660 watts.
